REFUND SUPPORT VOCATIONS PROGRAM (RSVP)
For this Columbian year, twenty councils are supporting at
least one seminarian. This includes councils that have partici-
pated in previous years and councils joining the program this
year. Letters were distributed at the October 2006 state meet-
ing or mailed to the Grand Knights, not present at that meeting.
Also, all councils and assemblies should have received a letter
from Msgr. Martin, Director of Seminarians. His letter explains
the financial needs of the seminarians; expresses his apprecia-
tion; and sets guidelines for reporting our seminarian donations
to the Vocations Office, through the RSVP chairman.
Thirteen men are currently studying to be priests for the Dio-
cese of Wilmington. Three are being supported by three coun-
cils each; nine by two councils each; and one by a single
council. We also have a brother knight studying to be a Jose-
phite brother, he also qualifies for the RSVP.
Any council not participating in the program that would like to
support a seminarian, or if your council would like to increase
their participation, please email or call the chairman. Likewise,
any council participating in the program that finds they can not,
continue please advise RSVP chairman PSD Ken Smith, at
(302) 674-1704; email:

The KofC is a Pro-Life organization. Stay informed of Pro-Life issues,
call and write your legislators, plan a Pro-Life Mass and/or Rosary for
your Council, get involved in the Life Chains.
The annual Souper Bowl food collection is a once-a-year charitable
activity that takes place Super Bowl weekend. The next Super Bowl
football game will be played Sunday February 4, 2007. For many
football fans it is a time for getting together, having a party, sharing
food and drink. Before the festivities, we can rightly ask people to
share something with those less fortunate. The Souper Bowl food
collection is endorsed by the Knights of Columbus Delaware State
Council. Bishop Michael Saltarelli has suggested in the past that
every council take part in this worthy endeavor.
Parish families are asked to donate one can of soup and one can of
food. Brother Knights collect the food before and after Masses on
Super Bowl weekend. The food is given to organizations such as
Parish Outreach or St. Vincent de Paul Society, who can distribute it
to those who are most in need. It need not cost your council any cash
outlay and could provide your council with much goodwill.
A good timeline for this project is:
5 Jan Start the planning committee
11 Jan Report at the state meeting on how things are going
3 Feb Collect all the canned goods, etc. and email the program
chairman an estimate of the amount collected in pounds.
4 Feb Enjoy the Super Bowl knowing you have helped the needy.
5 Feb Distribute the good's.
Please let me know if and how your Council plans to participate and
thank's for your participation. For any questions on the drive, please
contact program chairman Gerry Safranski at (
Safranski@aol.com
).
As program chairman, I shall report the total amount collected state-
wide to the national "Souper Bowl of Caring" web site at
www.souperbowl.org, before the Super Bowl football game starts.
POLAR BEAR PLUNGE
DELAWARE PRO-LIFE
ANNUAL SOUPER BOWL
The annual Polar Bear Plunge benefiting the Delaware Special
Olympics will take place Sunday, February 4, 2007, bringing to a
close another wonderful KofC Winter Weekend Get-a-way. The
Knights of Columbus Supreme Council entered a formal agree-
ment with the Special Olympics a few years back, pledging our
support of this worthy organization, begun by Eunice Kennedy
Shriver, wife of brother Knight Sargent Shriver back in 1962. She
invited 35 boys and girls to a day camp for people with intellectual
disabilities at her home in Rockville, Maryland to give them an
opportunity to explore their physical abilities while participating in a
variety of sports and physical endeavors. From humble begin-
nings, this camp grew every year until the Special Olympics move-
ment was born on 20 July 1968, when the First International Spe-
cial Olympics Games were held at Soldier Field, Chicago, Illinois.
Special Olympics today is a global movement with more than 2.25
million athletes in 150 countries around the world. Delaware State
Council has long supported the Delaware Special Olympics
through monetary donations and volunteer participation. Brother
Knights have been increasingly involved in the Plunge for a num-
ber of years, finally establishing the official Polar Knight's Team.
All Delaware Knights are asked to help make the 2007 Polar Bear
Plunge the most successful ever. When signing up, please specify
that you are part of the Delaware Knights of Columbus group and
the team name is the Polar Knights. Ask your Pastors if you can
collect pledges after Masses on a weekend in January, solicit your
friends, relatives, and co-workers and join in the Plunge. There
have been sightings of Polar Knights in swim trunks, flip-flops,
Hawaiian shirts, and straw hats collecting pledges at church doors
in past years. If you are unable to do this, sponsor a brother Polar
Knight with a donation. Several State Officers are members of the
Polar Knight team. It is rumored that a well-known State Officer
has "fallen off his rocker" and may take the Plunge. All Councils
are encouraged to support our Polar Knights with monetary dona-
tions. Some Councils vote to support their own Polar Knights with
individual pledges for each Council brother taking part in the event.
For more information, contact State Treasurer Ed Lichman at (302)
376-5558. Let's shoot for 100% Delaware Knights of Columbus
involvement in the 2007 Polar Bear Plunge, and join the Special
Olympic athletes in their oath, "Let me win. But if I cannot win,
let me be brave in the attempt."
