News for the Delaware Knights of Columbus
S T A T E D E P U T Y ' S M E S S A G E
Dear Brother Knights,
December 2, 2006, was a very special day in the history of the Delaware
Knights of Columbus. John Ryan, the first elected State Deputy of Delaware (1942-
1944) was buried from his life-long parish, St. Peter the Apostle Church in New Castle.
John was 100 years and 5 months old. Brother Knight, Bishop Michael A. Saltarelli
gave the final blessing of our Church at the cemetery. Very Reverend Authur B. Fiore,
John's pastor, officiated at the Mass of Christian Burial. Also on the altar were Bishop
Saltarelli, Associate State Chaplain, Very Reverend Steven B. Giuliano, Brother Knight,
Reverend William F. Graney and Salesianum President, Reverend James E. Dalton,
O.S.F.S. Before being called home to his Maker, John received the Last Rites on Sat-
urday evening, November 25
th
, from our State Chaplain, Reverend Philip L. Siry. He
died the next morning. Prior to Mass, Dr. Michael Ryan, one of John's sons, gave a
beautiful and all encompassing eulogy. When he finished, everyone knew John was
truly a remarkable father, Catholic gentleman and Knight. He was a man to be ad-
mired; someone to emulate. It is easy to see why P.S.D. Joseph R. Hood and State
Secretary Andrew M. Elisee always remembered him at all State functions and appreciated his mentoring. John,
we will do our best to follow your example. We'll miss you.
January
l
st
marks the mid-point of the Columbian Year and we have much to be thankful for. Our Lady
Queen of Peace Statue is near completion and will be dedicated by Bishop Saltarelli on Saturday, May 26, 2007,
at Holy Spirit Church, New Castle. All Knights and their families are invited to attend this momentous occasion.
We are very proud of the work everyone did to bring this project to completion. However, site work will require
an additional $30,000. We have already helped to raise $10,000 toward this cost. Priesthood Sunday was a big
success. Many parishes found various ways to honor our priests. North of the C&D Canal four billboards were
purchased. Steve Oldiges did a wonderful job with this project. Thank you, Steve! Our Scholarship Drive is in
high gear. We need everyone's help to reach our objective of two $500 scholarships for each of our 20 Catholic
elementary schools. Many good families are finding it difficult to make ends meet and keep their children in our
schools. If you buy a $10 raffle ticket and try to sell a few, we can do it! Sponsorship of the upcoming Polar Bear
Plunge are under way. All of the money we take in goes to support Special Olympics.
On Thursday, October 19, at the U. of D. I attended Heroes Night. The emcee was former Eagle player
Kevin Reilly and the featured speaker was future Hall of Famer, Cal Ripken. Awards were presented to the Spe-
cial Olympics athletes, coaches and sponsors. To see the commitment of everyone involved was inspirational. It
made me feel good to see that our efforts are needed and appreciated.
